The transition to Facebook continues for many business professionals seeking another way to deepen relationships and find new opportunities. Facebook offers multiple ways in which to engage in this behavior.
1. Join a Network - Facebook offers networks for colleges and current corporations and also for geography (cities). These networks provide you with additional ways to reach individuals you may be interested in working with. (Tip: Although you may live in a particular city, you may decided to join a network of a more economically valuable city (meaning, where the money is) such as New York, London, Toronto, Sydney, etc.
2. Be a leader - Facebook is still in the early growth of the non-college age group. Invite some of your associates, friends and family into Facebook. This will quickly deepen your network and allow you to experiment with some of the more than 3,000 add-on applications.
3. Post a picture(s) - Facebook allows for the posting of photographs to your profile as various albums. Take some pictures with you customers, co-workers and associates and post them. If you are traveling, take a digital camera with you and post regularly to allow your friends, family and associates to know where you are..
4. Be Playful - Since Facebook evolved from a college application, there are many fun applications developed. Since business in many cases is done virtually now, you can send virtual drinks, gifts and flowers. There are also games on here such as scrabble, poker and others which you can play with your friends.
5. Join or Create a Group - Facebook has thousands of special interest groups. These include groups for hobbies, politics, sports, business, alumni, and many more. These groups will open up more opportunities to meet and make "friends". Starting your own group will also allow you to attract people to your interests and causes.
6. Friends of Friends - In most cases, you will be allowed to view the "friends of friends". Click on your friends profile. While on their profile click "view friends". Browse through their friends to see if you can find anyone in common or where you may have an interest. You can also continue this technique to see more level of friends.
7. Find or Post an event - Do you have a trade show or special event you are joining? Post that information in Facebook. This can be posted by city or just for your friends or your group. This is a good way to "give back" while encouraging opportunities for meeting.
8. Share books, movies and music - Do you have a favorite band, author or movie. There are many facebook applications which allow you to post and comment on cultural activities and your likes/dislikes. You can see who is reading books that you are looking at.
9. Post a link - Have you read an interesting article or found information of use to others. Facebook allows the posting of links which show other users what you are reading. Outside services such as www.tumbleupon.com is an add on application with also makes this process easier as it automatically posts links to your favorite videos and articles
10. Communicate - Integrate instant messaging and phone applications into your Facebook profile. Skype allows for chatting and international calling. Jaxtr allows for phone calls to your mobile phone or home phone without allowing the caller to know your direct phone number. Both of these products will allow calls to come to from around the world for free.
